This documentary follows a 16-year-old high school student who grew up in Dahua, capturing the rhythms of his everyday life. On an ordinary walk home from school, he speaks about his tangled feelings for this small county town, and shares his quiet imaginings of the world beyond. In a place only recently lifted out of poverty, the gaokao is seen as the one and only road “out of the mountains”—as if leaving for a big city were the life everyone is supposed to long for. Yet the farther his footsteps reach outward, the more a deeper question begins to surface: Where, after all, is the place that truly calls us home?
