Just 10km outside the city of Baoding lies the small Chinese village of Dajidian. The village has a long and traditional history, and in the Tang Dynasty, it was an important centre of trade and commerce. Despite its cultural significance, the village itself remained poor, many of its houses built from wood and mud, and its streets dusty and dirty. However, in the last 10 years, new life has been given to old traditions, as China begins to revive its small villages by developing their tourist appeals and sustainability. With the help of government spending, investments from the villagers and the developments of the Yunxiangju Group, the village has begun to grow into a hub of activity, filled with free cultural sites, local craftsmen and artists, and ecological agriculture.
