Tao in Pills explores the basics principles of Taoism and its relationships with Traditional Chinese Medicine by narrating the life of Jian Shan, a traditional Chinese physician that found peace with the ancient Chinese culture of balance. Following him through a spiritual journey in the lands of Jiangsu, it shows the World as Lao-Tzu described it in the Tao-Te-Ching focusing on the themes of health, life and death. The ancient culture view the Earth, the Metal, the Water, the Wood and the Fire as the 5 element that describe and regulate all the processes of the World. The Traditional Chinese Medicine elevated this view, within the well-known Yin-Yang theory, to the fundamental principles of balance. Subdivided in 5 chapters, each of witch represent one of the 5 elements of TCM, Tao in Pills exploits the fundamental Taoist principle of unity to express the basic rules that regulate the World by narrating the life of a single man.
