Away, At Home is a documentary exploring the lives of foreigners living in Changsha through an intimate, everyday, and deeply personal perspective.Through the stories of five individuals from different backgrounds, the film examines the challenges, adaptations, and opportunities that arise when building a new life far from home. From language barriers and cultural differences to the gradual development of a sense of belonging, Away, At Home reflects on what it means to feel both like an outsider and at home at the same time.The city itself becomes part of the narrative, portrayed through the eyes of someone experiencing Changsha as a foreigner. During filming, my producer Amy told me, “You notice things here, as a foreigner, that I don’t even pay attention to anymore.” That observation became the core of the documentary: capturing the details, contrasts, and everyday moments of urban life that often become invisible to locals, yet carry a completely different meaning for those seeing them for the first time.Away, At Home is a story about identity, and how an outsider’s perspective can reveal hidden dimensions of a city and the people who inhabit it.
